The calendar may still say winter, but there is really no reason you can’t warm up with your sweetie in one of our romantic getaway locations, and the quiet and secluded hideaways of Visit Cook County will definitely speak to your heart’s desire.  During the winter, our summer crowds are absent, assuring couples have the opportunity for peace and tranquil rejuvenation, while discovering spectacular scenery in an area that contains more wildlife than people!

The Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts in Tofte offers top notch romance and relaxation packages.  With units complete with fireplaces and hot tubs, directly overlooking the Lake Superior shoreline, you can enjoy your picturesque and tranquil haven, or use it as your home base while you explore the area on ski, snowshoes, or skates!  At the Waves of Superior Spa, true nurturance is on the menu, and the holistic treatments are in line with the breathtaking natural surrounding – our forests, Lake Superior, and the snow and ice covered rocks.  Individual and couples packages are available.

The historic Lutsen Resort on Lake Superior is Minnesota’s oldest resort, established in 1885.  It was recently voted the “most romantic” resort by Minnesota Monthly readers, and for over 100 years, many travel here to simply slow down and unwind. This month, whether you’re on your honeymoon, taking a mini-moon, or just want to enjoy time with each other, the resort has always catered to couples seeking seclusion. They offer packages which include breakfasts, dinners, and champagne waiting in your room when you arrive!

And now for the chocolate! On Lutsen Mountains, overlooking lofty Moose Mountain, you will find Caribou Highlands, which offers deluxe slopeside lodging in the winter, complete with indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, hot tubs, and a whirlpool. Should you venture out to downhill ski, you can go directly from your room! Deep wilderness abounds on the Gunflint Trail.  If you are dreaming about a cozy little cabin nestled in the pines and deep snow, then this is the place for you. The Gunflint Trail is a historical 57-mile National Scenic Byway at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and Canada’s Quetico National Park. In the winter, you can enjoy hundreds of kilometers of uncrowded cross country trails, snowmobiling, dog sledding, and snow shoeing through an area that has breathtaking scenery.

Cuddle up in a lakeside fireplace cabin, with gourmet meals, wine and appetizers delivered right to your door. They’ll even pack your lunch to take with you! And before you snuggle into bed, don’t forget to head out on frozen Gunflint Lake to look at the stars on a dark and cloudless winter night. Should you catch a chill, head back to your in-room spa and steam shower, and with their Couple’s Spa package, schedule a massage with their onsite massage therapist.

Lastly, the historic village of Grand Portage is nestled closed to the Canadian border on Highway 61.  It once was a mecca for the fur trade industry and launching point into the Canadian interior.  Here you will discover Sweetgrass Cove Guesthouse and Bodywork Studio.  It is the ultimate retreat for privacy and sole (with soul!) seclusion.  Booking only one couple or one guest at time, the owner is a massage therapist, lives on site in a separated dwelling while you have full access to the finely crafted private wing of the main house. You will feel as though the waves will hit your room’s window! There is a large deck, a main room with sunny window seats, a loft sleeping area with either a king sized or twin beds, bathroom with shower and a separate dining area. As the owner was once a world traveler, the rooms are furnished and decorated with objects collected from his travels. Homemade and hearty breakfasts are served. Massage therapy is offered in a studio overlooking Lake Superior.   After your massage session, luxuriate in the warmth of a traditional wood fired Finnish sauna or soaking in the outdoor hot tub.
